Business Consulting

The McGuire Center's Economic Development Program helps to grow small businesses through consulting offered by Eller College business students, with mentoring from faculty and volunteers from local businesses. This fall, eight to ten small businesses will be selected to participate in a two-semester consulting experience.

ConsultingBenefits to Your Business

In the fall, businesses selected to participate will receive help in accounting and financial management from small teams of accounting students mentored by local certified public accountants (CPAs). In the spring, a class comprised of students from a variety of business disciplines will be dedicated to student consulting projects. Throughout spring semester, student teams and mentors will provide services requested by each business that could include:

  • Marketing data analyses
  • Assistance with sales campaigns
  • Advertising through social media
  • Analysis of information technology needs
  • Access to cutting-edge business management techniques

Professional Advisors

Consulting teams consist of three to four students and one or two advisors from the local business professional community. These teams assess their client's business development needs. Over the semester, these teams learn about consulting and problem-solving techniques through their consulting class and apply their knowledge with clients to identify their needs and develop recommendations for improvements.

Get Involved as a Business Advisor

Local business professionals have two opportunities to support the participating small business owners:

Accounting Advisor (Fall Semester)
In early August, a local CPA will team with two Beta Alpha Phi accounting students to evaluate the clients’ financial statements for accuracy and usefulness for decision making. The accounting teams and mentors help with any needed improvements and also meet with the business owners to review and clarify the statements and what they reveal about each firm’s financial condition.

Professional Advisors (Spring Semester)
A team with one or two professional advisors is matched with a local business to help assess its business development needs. These mentors and advisors work with student consulting teams to guide the teams’ research and recommendations to meet the needs of the small business owners. The industry-specific and project management knowledge of professional advisors enhances the student learning experience and helps students work with small business owners to increase their success.
